When children start skateboarding, many parents face the same question: Which Skateboard is right for my child?

The answer is more important than many think. A Skateboard that’s too big or unsuitable can quickly lead to frustration, insecurity, and even injuries. An age-appropriate board, on the other hand, makes getting started safer, easier, and above all, more fun.

In this guide, Little Boards shows you how to easily find the optimal skateboard size for your child – perfect for children from 3 to 11 years old.

A Skateboard for adults seems almost like a snowboard to a small child: too long, too wide, too heavy.

The proportions are off — and that makes starting skateboarding unnecessarily difficult.

A suitable children’s skateboard from Little Boards, on the other hand, offers many advantages:

  • More safety: Better control, easier balancing, less risk of falling
  • Faster learning progress: Experiences of success, more motivation, easier tricks
  • Support for development: Promotion of balance, coordination, and body control
  • Less frustration – more fun: Better handling, more enjoyment during practice

Board too big

  • Unwieldy and difficult to control
  • More difficult to push off, brake, and balance
  • Higher risk of injury
  • More difficult to learn tricks

Board too small

  • Unstable stance due to insufficient surface area
  • Wobbly riding feel
  • Less stability
  • Limited control

3–5 years

  • Deck width: 6.5″
  • Deck length: 26″
  • Wheels: 50 mm

Note: Micro-skateboards, especially light, maneuverable, ideal for the youngest

Children under 5 years (3–5 years)

At this age, the focus is on playful exploration

  • Micro-skateboards (6.5″)
  • Length: 26″ for high maneuverability
  • Lightweight for low effort
  • Short wheelbase (~26–28 cm)
  • Soft wheels (48–50 mm)
  • Easily portable – the child can move the board themselves

Important: Children under 5 should always skate under supervision.

Children from 5–8 years

Now begins the active skateboarding entry

  • Mini-decks with 7.0″ width
  • Length: 28.25″
  • Wheelbase approx. 28–33 cm
  • Soft wheels (50–52 mm)
  • Shoe size approx. 32–35 ➔ Deck width approx. 7.0″
  • First ollies, turns, and jumps possible

Children from 8–11 years

Here the boards approach adult models

  • Mid-size decks from 7.3″ width
  • Length: approx. 31″
  • Wheelbase approx. 33–35 cm
  • Wheels: 52–54 mm
  • Shoe size from 36+ ➔ Deck width up to 7.75″–8.0″
  • Optimal for street, ramp, and park

The skateboard size depends on age, height, and shoe size. For smaller children under 100 cm, we recommend 6.5″ decks, from 100–130 cm about 7.0″, and from 130 cm 7.3″ or wider. Shoe size, riding style, and safety are other important factors.

Especially for beginners, Little Boards recommends high-quality complete boards:

  • Pre-assembled
  • Ready to ride
  • Perfectly matched components
  • No assembly problems

Caution: Avoid cheap boards from toy stores. These are often heavy, poorly made, and unsuitable for safe skateboarding.

For all age groups: Always wear a helmet, knee pads, elbow pads, and wrist guards!

  • Protective gear minimizes injury risks
  • Essential especially for young beginners
  • Safe practice allows for more fun and faster learning

Children can start with first balance exercises from about 3 years old. Adult supervision and full protective equipment are always important. For very young children, special learning boards are sensible.

The right skateboard size is crucial for safety, learning success, and long-term enjoyment of skating.
